Men's Club

Have fun as we inspire men of all ages to be more involved in synagogue life through Avodah (service and prayer), Kehillah (community participation), and Tzedakah (charity).

Every male member of the community is invited to join the Beth El Men's Club. Members pay annual dues of $36 to support programming and events. New members of Beth El Congregation (within one year of joining the synagogue) pay no dues for their first year of Men's Club membership.

Why Join Today?
Now more than perhaps ever before, participation in The Beth El Men's Club is invaluable to its members and guests.

As many of you know, the poet and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, wrote a book called Walden.  Now Thoreau-- not a Men’s Club member; had he been, the book might have been called, “Valden,” --- still, he offers something of relevance for our purposes today.  In his book, Thoreau wrote that he had traveled "a good deal in Concord," meaning not just that he had explored every inch of that town but also that he had traveled inwardly, deeply, forming meaningful connections.   And that’s what the Men’s Club offers.

Each of us has a desire to make fundamental connections, to find a reason to laugh, to be enriched by our relationships. In this challenging era, where travel outwardly is limited, the Men’s Club very much offers the opportunity to foster tremendous experiences by traveling inwardly, dedicated to involving men of all ages in Jewish life through social, religious and service activities.

This coming year, our Men’s Club will provide quality programming to help develop and enhance our knowledge and understanding of Judaism and to provide needed services and support to the synagogue.

We will also offer a full calendar of social events as you will see below.

We are excited for the upcoming year. We hope you will join us, so together we can travel a good deal in Baltimore!

Highlights of the 2019-2020 Calendar:

  • October 2019:  “Scotch and Steak in the Sukkah.”  It was as fun as it sounds.
  • February 2020:The Great Wrap” with Rabbi Steven Schwartz and Cantor Thom King.  Men, women and children of the community joined together to learn about the ancient practice of laying Tefillin.  Followed by, of course, eating wraps.
  • March 2020:  Purim Carnival.  Boo Haman!

Upcoming Events and Opportunities for 2020-2021:

  • August 2020:  “Bunches of Lunches.”  Bunches of Lunches began as a program between Jewish Volunteer Connection and Krieger Schechter Day School where families made bagged meals to be donated to local shelters. Members of the Men’s Club plan to help deliver the lunches next month.
  • September 2020:  Zoom Trivia!  Why let the pandemic interfere with a chance to gather, play games and win prizes?   (That will not be one of the questions in the game!).
  • October 2020-March 2021:  A series of lectures featuring sports figures, authors and well-known community members.
  • April 2021:  “Scotch and Steak in the Springtime.” While the in-person Sukkah celebration may be delayed, it will not be forgotten!
