This course focuses on the art of Marc Chagall (1887-1985). He is one of the most important painters and ceramist artists who also produced sculpture, mosaics, tapestries, stained-glass windows and prints. The lectures focus first on his humble Jewish beginnings in Vitebsk (present day Belarus), his years in Paris, his years in New York during World War II, and his return to France settling in Vence. His art defies definition: although he formed part of the Surrealist movement, his work is more of a fairy-tale or a dream. The course analyses hundreds of his works including his famous stained-glass windows all over the world. The course is in the form of a power point presentation rich in colored images that invite questions and discussion.
