Rabbi Mark G. Loeb z"l

Rabbi Mark G. Loeb was raised in Boston andattended the Boston Latin School. From there, he studied literature and history at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Following college, Rabbi Loeb moved to New York where he developed a lifelong love of opera. After two years, he decided to attend Rabbinical School at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Eventually Rabbi Loeb was ordained as a rabbi from the Hebrew Union College. He came to Beth El in 1976 where he first served as the assistant rabbi to Rabbi Agus. In 1978 he became associate rabbi and two years later was installed as spiritual leader of Beth El Congregation.

During Rabbi Loeb’s 35 year tenure at Beth El the congregation doubled in size. Rabbi Loeb’s intellectual acumen, his caring pastoral presence,
and his fiery sermons helped to inspire generations of congregants to live more committed and meaningful Jewish lives. Despite the demands of a 1,700 plus family congregation, Rabbi Loeb also worked tirelessly to give back to his community. He served as National Chairman of Mazon, as president of the Baltimore Board of Rabbis, and as Chairman of the Board of the Baltimore Hebrew College.

The impact that Rabbi Loeb made at Beth El will be felt for many, many years. May his memory always be for a blessing, and may it serve as an inspiration to our congregation and its leaders for many years to come.
